Meet a Volunteer from the Old Stone House Gift Shop: Sue Carpenter

The Old Stone House is a gift shop owned and maintained by the Service League of Morgantown, a nonprofit organization with a mission to give back to their local community to improve the lives of local citizens through charitable, educational and cultural activities.

This historic stone house is the oldest stone dwelling in Monongalia County and was built around 1795. The house has served as the headquarters of the Service League of Morgantown since 1935, when the organization was originally started to help underprivileged children at the request of Eleanor Roosevelt. Sue says the gift shop is a good fit in downtown Morgantown because it’s a part of history.

Sue is currently the chair of the events committee and a frequent volunteer. She joined the league in 1984 and has been an active member since. Her favorite part about volunteering is that she likes the idea of a service organization that gives back to the community. Through the Service League, she has met many other volunteers and customers interested in learning the history of the organization.

What makes the Old Stone House Gift Shop unique? Well, the organization has been running it for around 85 years and it’s all run by volunteers. The unpaid staff come in and put in their time and effort to help better the community.

The league holds a Charity Partner Program where 10% of their sales will be donated to other nonprofits in the area during designated dates. Since the program began in 2008, a grand total of $41,967 has been donated. The charity this week is Catholic Charities from Dec. 20-31.

“We look at ourselves as the little shop that gives back,” Sue says.

Make sure to stop by the Old Stone House Gift Shop for many unique handcrafted items, such as wooden trees, Christmas aprons, stockings, holiday pillowcases, angel ornaments, Blenko glass, Naked Bee products, WV foods, and much more! Shop here to help support a good cause.
